Dirk Lehnhoff was elected president of Cooperatives Europe at the 2013 General Assembly in Istanbul.
Cooperatives Europe supports the objective of the proposal as a tool to help enterprises wishing to integrate sustainability into their strategies and activities.
EU Commission Vice-president Tajani presented on February 19th the new Entrepreneurship 2020 Action plan to the Competitiveness Council. Through a pro-active entrepreneurship policy, the plan aims to create jobs, growth and a more competitive economy. A follow-up of this debate is planned at the informal ministerial meeting of May 1st-2nd in Dublin.
On September 28-29, 2012 the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU hosted a high-level cooperative conference in Nicosia as part of the EU’s contributions to the UN International Year of Cooperatives. Around 200 participants attended the event, which was organised by Cooperatives Europe and the Cypriot Authority for the Supervision and Development of Cooperative Societies.
On September 12, 2012 the European Commission released the communication ‘The roots of democracy and sustainable development: Europe’s engagement with Civil Society in External relations’. The new definition of Civil Society Organisation includes cooperative enteprises.
On 7th July 2012 co-operative businesses around the world will celebrate the International Day of Co-operatives.
Mr Ban Ki Moon, Secretary General of the United Nations, launched a strong message to governments around the world in order to encourage them to create more awareness and to pursue policies for strengthening co-operatives everywhere.
On 3rd July 2012 Cooperatives Europe, COSV, the Union of Co-operatives of Montenegro and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development hosted the joint conference ‘The Case for Gateway Co-operatives in Montenegro and the Balkans’.
On 19 June 2012 Co-operatives Europe, Euro Coop and CECODHAS Housing Europe hosted a joint high-level conference in the framework of the EU Sustainable Energy Week in Brussels. The objective of the event – “Power to the People: Can citizens lead Europe’s future energy strategy?” – was to create lively and in-depth debate on the key question of how citizens can guide EU energy policy.
Cooperatives Europe, COSV Montenegro, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development of Montenegro, and the Union of Cooperatives of Montenegro are hosting a multi-level Balkan Co-operative Conference – The Case for Gateway Co-operatives in Montenegro and the Balkans: Reflections and Discussions. This event serves as a culminating event for the European Union funded co-operative rehabilitation project that COSV, Cooperatives Europe with several member and partner organisations, as well as local stakeholders have been implementing in Montenegro since June 2011.
The new Union of "Macedonian Association of Agriculture Cooperatives" has just been created, an inauguration that introduces a reinvigorated element into the panorama of co-operative development in the Balkan region. Indeed, the Union is born out of a democratic decision of its now-members.
Cooperatives Europe, COSV and other co-operative unions and experts from Europe have served as a motor for the dynamic engine that drove the establishment of this new Union.
