    On May 6th, Dirk Lehnhoff was elected president of Cooperatives Europe. 90% of the members of Cooperatives Europe participated in the elections and two thirds voted in the new president as well as the new Board of Cooperatives Europe at the 2013 General Assembly of Cooperatives Europe in Istanbul.

    Lehnhoff is currently a member of the Board of Directors of DGRV, the apex organisation of the German cooperative movement and responsible for the International Relations Department of DGRV.

    On 16th April the EU Parliament rejected the EU Commission's proposal to raise the price of carbon by delaying the auctioning of emission allowances. Prices of allowances will therefore remain low at least until 2020 -unless the Commission will take urgent actions against it- and the ETS (European Trading system) will thus not help reducing green house emissions until then.

    As announced in the Single Market Act communication in April 2011 and the communication ‘A renewed strategy, 2011-2013, for Corporate Social Responsibility’ issued in October 2011, Commissioner Barnier presented this afternoon a proposal enhancing the transparency of companies.

    The European Parliament unanimously embraced on the 14th of March an initiative report on the Statute for a European Mutual society.

    The report emphasizes that a statute for a European mutual society will create an optional instrument of law for mutual societies that, for instance, would allow them to act in different EU countries or would serve as the regulation for mutual societies that do not have national regulations in their own countries.

    EU Commission Vice-president Tajani presented on February 19th the new Entrepreneurship 2020 Action plan to the Competitiveness Council. Through a pro-active entrepreneurship policy, the plan aims to create jobs, growth and a more competitive economy. A follow-up of this debate is planned at the informal ministerial meeting of May 1st-2nd in Dublin.

    Three member organisations of Cooperatives Europe were part of the official delegation accompanying EU Commission's Vice-President Tajani on his 'Mission for Growth' to Morocco and Tunisia at the end of November 2012. The objective of the visit was to reinforce commercial partnerships, in order to help industry and SMEs to fully exploit the trade relations potential between these two North African countries and the EU.

    The Economic and Social Committee of the Republic of Bulgaria, supported by the Bulgarian cooperative movement, held the conference "The role of cooperatives for the development of social economy'  on December 4 in Sofia. Etienne Pflimlin, Co-president, and Klaus Niederländer, Director, were invited to speak on behalf of Cooperatives Europe.

    On 19th November 2012 Cooperatives Europe participated in a conference in Ioannina, Greece, on promoting the cooperative enterprise model, organised by Kapa Network and the Ioannina University. In these times of crisis, there is a growing interest in collectively owned enterprises, which are rooted in local communities and which create and maintain local employment.

    By organizing a workshop at the World Forum Lille, Cooperatives Europe brought cooperatives to one of the world largest forums for socially responsible enterprises. The title of the workshop was ‘Empowering people around the world through the cooperative enterprise model’ and chaired by the Director of Cooperatives Europe, Klaus Niederländer, two cooperatives from Europe and Latin America presented concrete examples to the delegates of the cooperative difference in this area.
