Recongizing the Role of Co-operatives in the Domestic Economy: UK example
19 January 2012 - In the wake of the International Year of Co-operatives, UK government announced today a new consolidated Act for Co-operatives. This announcement, made by the Prime Minister David Cameron, means that the 17 separate pieces of legislation governing the sector, much of which dates back to 1965 and has been developed piecemeal, may now be consolidated into one Act. The announcement comes at the start of the International Year of Co-operatives.
Power of co-operation: Members outnumber shareholders by three to one
16 January 2012 - There are now three times more members of co-operatives than individual shareholders worldwide, according to a new report. The report, ’Global Business Ownership 2012’ reveals that, despite only seven per cent of the world’s population living in a country without a stock market, just 328 million individuals are direct shareholders compared with the one billion who are members of a co-operative enterprise.
Co-operatives for Europe: political agenda for 2012 released
12 January 2012 - Cooperatives Europe has launched the European agenda of co-operative enterprises in Europe for 2012: ’Co-operatives for Europe: Moving forward together’. The political agenda builds on the Europe 2020 strategy by bringing forward co-operative solutions. It streses a more co-operative way of doing business, which is modern, collective, responsible and sustainable. the aim of this agenda is to provide a platform for a dialogue whith policymakers, in order to bring about concrete solutions for today’s key economic, social and environmental challenges.
Press conference: International Year of Co-operatives officially launched in Europe
12 January 2012 - Cooperatives Europe with other organizations representing co-operatives at European level hold joint press conference held a major press conference at the presence of Ms Pervenche Berès, Member of the European Parliament and Chair of the Employment and Social Affairs Committee, and Mr Luis Manuel Capoulas Sanots, Member of the European Parliamnet."There is a totally unexploited potential which the International Year should put forward. The objective of 2012 is to make clear the modernity of the co-operative movement" said Ms Berès.
Co-operatives celebrate the start of the International Year of Co-operatives
12 January 2012 - On the 12th of January 2012 co-operatives across Europe and the world united their voices and marked the start of the International Year of Cooperatives. A whole range of events took place around Europe and the world. In Belgium, France, UK, Italy, Denmark, Bulgaria, Portugal and many other countries co-operatives and co-operative organisations told the world that 2012 is the International Year of Cooperatives.
